Winter Brings Cold Air, Fires and Carbon Monoxide
More home fires occur during the winter months than at any other time during the year. The Sterling Fire Department reminds you to be mindful of the additional fire hazards present during the winter months. Use extra care when using space heaters, wood stoves and other heating appliances.
You Changed Your Clocks, But Did You Change Your Batteries?
Smoke detector batteries should be changed at least twice a year. A good way to remember is to plan on changing your smoke detector batteries the same time you adjust the clocks for daylight savings. Remember, even if you have hard-wired smoke detectors you most likely still have batteries in them for use as a back up power source. Don't forget to change your batteries!

PROTECTION THROUGH PREVENTION

SSTERLING FIRE DEPARTMENT'S PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The core of the Sterling Fire Department's Fire Prevention services is the S.A.F.E. (Student Awareness of Fire Education) public education program sponsored by the SFD. The S.A.F.E. program is funded solely through grant money obtained through the State Department of Fire Services and allows us to have a firefighter traineed as a Life Safety Public Educator visit all local preschool, kindergarden and grade 1 through 4 classrooms to incrementally teach students about the hazards of fire and the things they should know to help keep protect themselves in emergencies. We use the nationally recognized "Learn Not To Burn" curriculum developed by the NFPA and employ a lesson plan consisting both classroom and activity based lessons. In addition to the work in the schools we have also have programs aimed at helping to educate elders about fire safety and work with community businesses by providing classes such as proper use of fire extinguishers. All services are provided at no cost to the community.
