Fire Prevention Division

Permits, Inspections, Investigations and Code Compliance

The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for issuing and enforcing permits and conducting inspections and investigations authorized under Massachusetts General Law 148 and 527 CMR 1 (Fire Prevention Regulations). Permits can be filed and paid for electronically using the Permit Link system.

All inspections, including smoke detector (26-F), oil burner, oil tank and LP-gas storage tanks, are scheduled through the Fire Department Executive Assistant M-F between 8AM and 4PM.

Outdoor Burning

Outdoor burn permits are issued each year between January 15th and May 1st.

Open Burning Regulations

Fire Pits and Chimineas

Small recreational and cooking fires are allowed without a permit, provided the do not create a nusiance and certain precautions are followed. Click on the icon to view the rules relating to recreational fires.

Community Outreach Programs

Our community outreach programs are structured around our belief that preparation is the best form of preventing emergencies. We work closely with our senior citizen groups, regional school districts, business and industry leaders and youth athletic leauges to help give regular citizens the tools and training they need to help make a difference during emergency situations.

CPR Training

Using curriculum developed by the American Heart Association, The Sterling Fire Department offers free programs to teach school students, staff, corporate teams, and community organizations the CPR and first aid skills needed to be prepared to act in an emergency.

Lock Box Program

The Sterling Fire Department offers a key box program to senior citizens over the age of 65. Free of charge, the fire department will provide a secure lock box that holds a spare key to your home. The fire department will install it demonstrate how to use it. Should you ever have an emergency, police & fire can enter your home without having to damage.

S.A.F.E. Program

The Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) program allows the Sterling Fire Department to teach fire and life safety to children in schools. The program teaches students to recognize the dangers of fire and the fire hazards of tobacco products through 23 key fire safety behaviors taught in developmentally appropriate ways.

Reflective Street Number Program

The Sterling Fire Department provides free, reflective, highly visible house number signs to aid in identifying your street number from the road. When seconds count, the ability for First Responders to find the correct address can make all the difference. Contact the SFD to order yours today.

Fire Extinguisher Training

It's important to understand that with proper training, fire extinguishers can save lives and property. Many people might not know how or when to use fire extinguishers. The Sterling Fire Department offers free fire extinguisher training and is always willing to answer questions about fire safety that community members may have.

Senior SAFE Program

Senior SAFE is a program that supports fire and life safety education for seniors. Seniors are at high risk in the event of a fire. THis program teaches seniors about the hazards associated with cooking, smoking, home oxygen use, and electrical and heating dangers and also are assisted with the proper maintainence of home smoke and CO detectors.

The Fleet of the SFD

The Sterling Fire Department front line fleet consists of two (2) class "A" engines, one (1) aerial, a medium duty rescue, a type "6" brush engine, two (2) Class 1 ambulances and one (1) Class 5 ambulance. We operate out of one fire station located at 5 Main Street Sterling, MA.
